Round one is over and eight Monsterpocalypse players stand victorious while 8 other monsters lay breathless in their own blood. The first round ran smoothly with the last game being squeaked in just before midnight with Robert emerging victorious over Josh, last year’s GenCon Masters champion. Everyone will be getting emails today with their opponents contact information, army list, etc. Armies will remain the same.
For this round I’m going to ask that players post their agreed upon time in the comments of this blog. This will be included in the instructions on the email. Without further ado, I present to you the round 2 bracket of Monday Night Monster. Below the bracket you will find all of the log files for your viewing and scouting pleasure.
Steven vs. Kevin
Philip vs. Bobb – no vlog because it was played via email
Jeremy vs. Terrence
Josh vs. Robert
Tim vs. Chris
Ken vs. Brad – no vlog because Brad did not show up to play, so Ken won by default
Marcus vs. John
Zach vs. Nate

There will be a report on my game with Bobb. I hope the fact that a logfile is unavailable doesn’t cause anyone any headaches.
You played your round over email, right Phil? I think that’s a pretty valid reason not to have a logfile.
I’ll save you the trouble of downloading Jeremy vs. Terrence. My internet connection did not hold up. We got about three rounds in and I was behind. My units died early and often. I took a throw into a building before I realized I might have some mobility advantages. Rusty play and bad connection lead to a first round loss.
This round went really well. It seems as though with each round the games should get more and more epic. I cannot wait to see who comes out on top.
Hey Zach, am I doing something wrong? I’m trying to work my way through the game between you and Nate, and it will only go as far as him laying down his first Mt. Terra. Any ideas?
Weird. I’ll try to verify.
@Jeff – seems to be working fine actually. Phil just hit the page button and went all the way through the log. Let me know if it still won’t work for you.
I was able to run the whole thing, JeFF… not sure what’s going on for you.
Huh, must just be me. Weirdest thing, too. It’s like VASSAL freezes at that moment, because it won’t let me undo anything either. I just went through Jeremy and Terrence’s game just fine (and would love to see it adapted into a MonPoc Puzzle
). Thanks for double-checking for me.
It stalled on me for a second there, but it kept going… might just need to keep at it. If they did a lot of stuff that got into the log file but doesn’t do anything on the screen… well, it still takes time. Try holding down the Page Down button.
Ah ha, holding down pg dn did it! Thanks!
Nice. It was a solid game. Doing a battle report this week (along with a report on my game with Theorist)!
It is funny holding “pagedown” and watching the game like it was a movie.
I can almost see the little japanese people running in fright…
Philip and I have scheduled our match for Tuesday, 6pm Pacific/8pm Central, barring any last minute scheduling conflicts.
My wife seems to have figured out what my internet problems were, so hopefully that means no downtime in the future. now we just need to find a reliable and close babysitter.
I’m looking forward to seeing Phillp’s writeup. since we played our game over e-mail and several of my turns were played away from Vassal, it’s a little harder to put everything back together.
Okay, I managed to download all the ones up except the Kevin/Steven match. A pity, I wanted to see that one.
Curse you Kevin! Be careful Phil – Kevin’s not only good, he dabbles in dice voodoo. Stay away from upper 80% odds =)
Can’t wait for this next round.
OK, Rob, I’m open Wednesday after 4 PM till 10 PM, Friday at 4-6 PM and 8 PM onward, and Sunday for whenever. I am in Central Time, btw. Pick a time in there, and post it up. I’m ready to avenge Josh.
You may call me Robert or Galactus. Friday night at 9pm your time will be acceptable.
Cool. Be prepared for a whuppin’ Galactus! First game on Vassal, guess what monster I schooled? Yep, Mega Yasheth. +)
Hey Axl,
I’ll need to ask that we bump our game to Sunday @ say 9pm. I forgot that I had committed myself to things on Friday night which I would do well to honor.
Let me know if this works for you.
You know, Galactus, I definitely want a rematch sometime, man. I still need to get some serious revenge for that beatdown you gave me.
And to Axl -
AVENGE ME, MY BROTHER! AVENGE MEEEEEEEE!!!!!
Looks like Kevin and I are going to be playing tomorrow night.
I have the first half of my horrible failure including the majority of actual events that caused it to be a horrible failure (Missing 2-3 80-90% form killing rolls.) instead of a crushing victory. Bad matchups suck!
Just played my game with Kevin. Definitely the fastest paced game of Monsterpocalypse I’ve ever played and while there were definitely mistakes made, I feel like the haphazard nature of the game made it much better than the slow war of attrition I was expecting.
Playing Thursday evening at some point. Will post if details firm up.
@Phil / Kevin – great game gentlemen. It was a close one!
Though it was a fun game with all the carnage, I’m kicking myself hard for the blatant mistakes I made. It should have really gone to Philip but my higher life and greater damage dealing potential gave me the win. Good playing by Philip. It was down to the wire there. I’m glad there were no big whiffs…just a fast and furious damage race.
That was a brutal game. Talk about not wasting any time before mixing it up. Quite different from the game Phillip and I played.
The worst (or best) thing about losing a game that close is that I keep asking myself “What could I have done differently?”
I’m definitely looking forward to a rematch sometime, Kevin. But until then, tear ‘em up in the next two rounds. I’m sure Steven’s right there with me, cheering you on.
Sadly I think Anglax has to play the attrition game when vs. Quantum Kondo. So I think one of the things you could have done differently is hold back just a little bit. Though that first throw for 5 damage was ripe for the picking, it may have sealed your doom because you were then going toe-to-toe with a monster near his spawn points, that has more life, and super damage. Had the battle taken place more in the middle of the map and you been able to get off another leach unit hit, it would have been yours.
I think the smash is what ultimately sealed my fate. A body slam or throw into the Insurance (as Bobb suggests below) would have still left me near your territory, but with Leach or the option to back-to-back, it’s possible that Anglax might have emerged victorious.
Of course, by the same theorypocalypse token, there were a few things you would have done differently too, if we had it to do over, making the entire point moot. So while I can sit here and say “If I’d only…” Kondo still won the day.
I don’t know if it would have mattered, but I thought a Body Slam into the Insurance HQ was the better move at that point. You’d have done less damage, but taken less at the same time. Leach could have sustained you a turn or two longer, which might have been all you’d need to finish him off.
But sometimes you just need to go for broke.
Bobb, that’s actually the conclusion I finally reached. It might not have guaranteed a win, but I think, at the very least, it would have been a stronger play for the long-term.
I saw it just after you smashed…and I don’t know that many players would have been able to pass up that smash
I know you didn’t notice the Bellower at the time, and I didn’t either. Kevin may have left himself open, but he recovered nicely from it. It was a good game to watch, quick and brutal.
It is getting pretty late in the week. Is anyone else having a match?
