So there I was, reality thoroughly checked into me by the previous Maxim beatdown. After such a horrible showing I figured I was out… but that’s why God created the loser’s bracket, so that poor fools like me could get a second chance.
I found out as the first round neared an end (which took a while since my defeat was so swift), that a few choice members of Team Covenant were to face off against Team Martin, a very cool family of MonPoc players who were also floating around in the loser’s bracket. I got the youngest Martin who was thankfully not fielding Maxim, or any SSS units for that matter. We shook hands and got down to business.
I won the roll, which took the burden of choosing the wrong map off my shoulders. My opponent chose Block War. Another sigh of relief, this map I knew. Heck, I even had my first two turns figured before I picked up any dice. This game might just go my way.
When your Mothership is still smoking from the speed in which it was trashed, it is such a relief to look at the opposing monster and not see Beat Back. I quickly relaxed and played MY game, the one I had won with and blogged about here. The one I have written about on the community site. The one where the Mothership isn’t thrown around like some interstellar Frisbee.
I powered up, zoomed around and got one or two power/nullifier pods out, hypered up then took to power attacking. It worked, and it worked well. I was soon tractor beam deep in his powerbase, fastballing him into building after building. If I made a mistake, I don’t remember it. My opponent made one mistake and that was reading Negation wrong. He thought that if he started his advancement not adjacent to the Mothership he could still power attack if he ended his advancement next to her. He asked me for clarification and I thought he was talking about rampaging. So there WAS a bit of confusion that came out in my favor and if you are reading this Mr. Martin, sorry about that.
Still, the game went well and above all I had a lot of fun. Don’t get me wrong I can have fun losing, a skill honed over the last two decades of my life, however, there is a difference between losing and not even needing to roll the dice. But, dang, when DC came over to get the scores and marked me down for that W, I was ecstatic!
You have to realize that in a few short months I went from never playing any sort of collectible game to getting a win in the MonPoc Masters. Not too shabby! And with this win it puts me in the running for the Wildcard. I could make it to the second day!
The question is will I. That’s next week. =)

A note to my readers: I have been trying my hardest to keep this blog updated weekly and apologize for the inconsistency. However, Team Covenant has had me busy on some super secret, super awesome video projects. Hopefully in a few weeks we can reveal one of them to you. Till then… I’ll see you next week for the next chapter in my rise to the top!

Um, what was Martin playing with?
Shh… don’t mention super secret projects. You’ll get us all riled up and then Zach and Steven have to calm us down until it’s ready.
lol… great question JeFF… so far all we know is the map and Mothership.
That’s because I forgot. But after digging into my memories a bit. I can tell you that it was a Terrasaur army. Very possibly with Armodax leading it.
Why can’t you just be happy for me!!! =)
lol
I am happy for you, sir. I just need to live vicariously through you and it’s easier to do with more information. Meanwhile, my boat is still powered by lima beans.
Sorry, not trying to bust your chops. Like Philip, though, when I read a game report, I want to be able to visualize it, even gain something from it.
Nice write-up. Just to let everyone know, everything at gencon was one, giant, fantastic, blur. I can’t imagine writing any type of report this long after. Great work Jonathan.
No worries. I didn’t think you were trying to bust my chops. In retrospect, since I knew I was going to write about all of my encounters in the tourney, I should have jotted down some basic notes. Names, monsters, units, that sort of thing. Oh, well, I’ll know better next time.
And isn’t that what this blog is all about. =D
