I will start with my traditional comment without first listening to the podcast: I think you need a catchier title for the ‘cast.
I said the exact same thing!
Well then, I withdraw my previous comment.
You’re a previous comment!
You’re both just jealous of Phil’s “Troll Extraordinaire” title.
The title shows your bias. Warmachine did come first, yet here it is given second billing. Boo!
Well, it does have the cooler looking big models…
Pfft! Details. Besides, Cryx ‘jacks are pretty bad-arse looking.
I’ll give you that. They could almost pass for a warbeast with just a little covering.
I LOVE the little Cryx chicken ‘jacks. And when you see the other faction ‘jacks in person they have more appeal.
I like seeing what people do with their forces, but the studio themes, after seeing them over and over, just get boring. Although that’s as much true for Hordes as it is for WM.
Alphabetical!
Pfft! The twitter tag is Warmahordes, not the other way around (although that way does have it’s proponents)…
I wouldn’t mind Hordemachine, but any way to slice it, there are people for and against it.
Actually the correct way to say it is “Hormachine”.
Nice! You guys just saved me from doing work on my own warmahordes podcast.
Nice listen, it’s gonna be fun to hear how you develop. Going to a tournament tomorrow, will try and do another recap of it and let you all know how it went.
Are you going to be bringing Cryx again? If so, I’m doubly interested to hear how it went. And good luck!
Yes!
My first post here, and I know this isn’t a painting-centric episode, but it was mentioned that your washes turn out a bit too thick. If you mix a tiny (and I mean miniscule) amount of dish soap into your wash it breaks the surface tension and allows the wash to flow more freely into the places you want it to go.
Interesting. I’ll have to try that.
If you use inks for your washes you don’t have to worry about the surface tension. I would actually recommend using an Acrylic Extender instead of dish soap, it’s designed for the purpose and sometimes with dish soap you will get problems with your paint adhering. Another alternative is to use the specific brand “Future Wax” floor polish… it’s really just a very thin acrylic medium and is a better alternative than dish soap but not as good as acrylic extender.
I told Phil that eventually I will get up a blog about miniature prepping, painting, basing, etc. I’m really busy right now with work and the holidays but maybe I can break it up into parts and get the first part up before the end of the year. But I make no promises.
I know as much as I’d like to play this game, and as much as I’d like to make some cool paint jobs. I have always been an art student who has sucked at any form of paint. Most of my art is pencil, much like my avatar, which is about the size it was drawn as. (a 1″ by 1″ square)
I haven’t been able to make the RL Hormachine to Vassal connection yet… it just doesn’t make the transition for me as smoothly as MonPoc does (even MonPoc Vassal isn’t the same, as we all know, but it translates more directly.) RL Hormachine involves so many spatial judgements and timing issues that just don’t translate to Vassal. If it was my only option I would of course go that way but IMO the relationship to the live game vs. online is tenuous.
If you can see a part of a model, even if it’s hard to get to, you can still paint it… painting pieces separately you a treating them separately and they just don’t look as good as a whole. I find it much better to be patient and work your way around pieces to keep that “whole” appearance. Also, if you have to glue something on after it is painted you are rubbing your dirty fingers(trust me, they’re dirty) all over the paint you just put on… you should try to NEVER touch any part of your model other than the base(and really, you should mount the base to something) until you get your sealer/varnish on and dried.
You should ALWAYS prime white or at least grey UNLESS you model is primarily black(which I don’t recommend) or primarily metal. You will never get colors as vibrant with a black primer, acrylic model paints are always on some level transparent, so your stuff will look dingy and lifeless with a black primer. Grey primer for a more realistic tone but hey, we’re playing with monsters and steam powered robots here, we already crossed the reality border. Also, if you’re lazy and are more concerned about get the models finished with the more forgiving black primer, I guess that is an acceptable reason, but they will never look as good as they could with white or grey primer.
Modeling blog from me coming soon. I (sort of) promise.
