Cogitations and Prognostications
By Chugosh– February 8, 2013
So I only just watched the post about PP being general pills about it all, and I have to agree with your decisions. That being so, I feel no compunction in making my own figures from FIMO or the like to fill in for units I will never be able to get as cheaply. A few dinos and a van or two? no problem. I can even go way off the farm and make entirely new monsters and units, assuming the interest takes hold enough.
I am unfortunately a terrible dabbler. I’ll get into something for a little while, and then something else will come up. With luck this happens before I’ve blown considerable time, money and effort on it. Not so with either Monsterpocalypse or Heroscape, on which I did blow rather more coin than was prudent given my circumstances.
So I come to my latest dabbles, since Heroscape flashed in my pan. I saw some stuff about Infinity and went a bit nuts looking at all the very cool nifty, but then I was saved in the nick of time by a couple of RPG kickstarters that got me thinking about them again. The good part about the RPGs I particularly like is that the publishers are going for a pay what you can model or the free release under creative commons. FATE Core had an amazing success at the kickstarter, and will be sold in its soft and hard cover forms for decent coin, but they say they will be releasing the pdfs in the pay what you can or what you think it is worth model. My other faves are the series of games related to Old School Hack, which are all download for free as of this.
And that leads me to this, which is actually the point of my article tonight. I decided I was going to write up an all new fantasy world to play in in which I would use the systems in the Hack game and tweak everything to fit just so. And then, after putting a few hours into it, I came to the realization that This is what I always do with this sort of thing! I find something good and fun and instead of looking to the existing game and community, I start in with the tweaking and hacking and only then wonder why nobody wants to play my version or join me in my delusional land. The definition of insanity is repeating the same actions and expecting different results.
So I’m putting away the tweaking and hacking tools, and I’m just going to play, whether that’s Heroscape, Mon Poc, Pathfinder, FATE Core, D&D or Parcheesi.

Actually I’m just like you in that way — and I’d play with you, you are certainly not alone. My brother EXPECTS it of me, in fact it’s the first thing we did with X-wing after a 65 point teaching game.
That tweaking is coming from a healthy place… you see something that makes you less happy, and instead of accepting it you see if you can’t do something about it. But so is taking a break from it… you see that it’s not working, so you continue to look. Too many people don’t look. They just resign.
