Okay – so here’s my latest crazy idea. Combining Dragon’s with The Maester’s Path. I’ve wanted to try it for some time and it has won on Turn 2, but if it doesn’t win quickly, it dies a gruesome death and a bad draw can just nuke you. Since Team Covenant is just loaded with great Targ players… please FIRE AWAY! Tell me I’m crazy for even trying this – tell me why it’ll never work – tell me what might make it work – tell me the tech I’m missing – tell me I don’t even understand Maester’s and have no business doing this – or tell me what your favorite food is whilst traveling on the road. Whatever.

The point of the deck is to try and utilize the utility of the Maester’s agenda to handle most of the stuff that gets thrown in, plus I include two Copper Links to give my Maester’s the Dragon trait. Dragon Bite prevents challenges more often than anything else and Dragon Fear makes for an interesting time at the conclusion of a MIL challenge… I have to kill who? Why? Well, crap!

The problems with the deck are gold curve (pretty high) and if you draw nothing but Dragons early with no Dragon Lore… you’re kind of toast. Maybe Ambush is the right call here, but I had struggles with that. Distinct Mastery has been a boon to stand a Maester after kneeling for whatever effect I’ve knelt them for (pretty awesome when combined with Outwit).

I think there are too many non-chain attachments clogging up the deck and I need more characters, but Dragon Lore nets me Dragons for free. Dragon Fear may be the one to cut. I may not need the extra Copper Link. Putting 2 Apprentice Collars in my draw deck has helped on setup… unless I only draw Dragons. Then they’re useless. Perhaps put some Hatchlings in instead of extra Dragon dupes to even out the curve?

Do I have the right links in there? Do you see anything that is spurious? Maybe Balerion is overkill (and his effect can backfire on you… it seems you only want to play him if you’re going second – nuke the board after your opponent has marshaled and then play the rest of your characters after that).

  1. I love these off the wall Dragon decks!

    At first glance, it seems like it has to draw well to do anything. I also worry about your set up and claim soak.

    Conclave may be too expensive in the build. Initiate of the Citadel, maybe?

    Copper Link + Balerion is awesome, as you can make Dany a Dragon and get a third challenge type in with her renown. It’s so awesome it has to stay in, IMO.

    Meraxes is good, but do you need it in this rush setup? Cut it for income, maybe?

    Hatchlings I’m not sure on, b/c you’ll be gold light anyway, so the shadows ones will drain that even more, and the others get discarded if you run out the real ones. Maybe skip them.

    One thing I did at regionals is use True Power to cancel a power attack rather than having to kneel dragons. You can also use At Night They Howl in a distinct-mastery type of way. Also synergy with Copper link. I’d keep two in there (of the copper link, that is).

    Very interesting. Maybe more a fun build than a competitive one, but I think it could work.

    1. Yeah – I used to have more Initiate of the Citadel in there and Oldtown Scholar… trying to remember why they’re gone… probably for strength. Conclave became almost free with those cheap Maesters in play.

      Yeah – Copper Link needs to stay, I agree. True Power is actually a good thought… but I’m usually having to kneel for MIL not power, so not sure if it synergizes well – the Maesters almost all have power, so they can kneel for those attacks.

      I do think I need to try and get those cheap Maesters back in. Conclave has been really great in some setups. They can give themselves Renown and if they have any chains (or anyone else has chains) you can make them a Dragon or even give them a MIL icon. So much synergy there and they’re powerful.

      Yeah – Hatchlings introduce all sorts of problems in timing. If you draw a Dragon, you want to wait until you can play the Hatchling, but then the Dragon can be intrigued away (though you shouldn’t be losing an Intrigue challenge with a Maester’s deck).

  2. Matt tried a Maester build for a day though I never played against it myself. It got fairly torched by Zack’s burn deck because he could nuke all Matt’s maesters. Still, I think it’s got potential and between the 3 of you targ players you can likely come up with a solid build.

    I would say there are likely way to many attachements and too few characters.

    I supposed Jack of all trades is in there simply because of being a 2 cost tricon?

      1. And, yes, it’s my go-to choice for Outwit if it’s in play. Why kneel a Maester in the plot phase when you can just kneel a 2G character?

      2. He is pretty awesome. I used him in a GJ holy deck for a bit. In regards to Outwit I suppose that is true, but you’d have to give him the icon Pre-plot reveal. And if your opponent suspects you plan to Outwit they may play something different. Either way, you get to “cancel” the Valar that turn lol.

    1. I do love that card… it’s so stinking cheap! It’s one of the most flexible cards you can toss in. I’ve used it for Outwit, I’ve used it in a Nobles deck, I’ve used it for War Crests… and it’s only 2 gold.

      That said, I’m not married to the card – I’ve pulled it from any number of builds, but when I’m building something Crest-specific I tend to include the card for the added effects it can bring.

    2. Yep.. I tried a similar build which worked out fairly well. My biggest issues were that I played a couple of burn players that kept killing off my Maesters since they were generally easier to burn than dragons.

      I also occasionally forgot to remove chains from my agenda.. either that or I didn’t have any maesters on the board to attach them to after a challenge. And I was running a fairly maester heavy deck along with Dany/Dragons.

      The other issue was claim soak as Buz mentioned. When choosing to have to kill either Dany or A Dragon or a Maester.. I will almost always kill the Maester. Unless he is loaded to the teeth with attachments he isn’t doing much for me offensively.

      Of the three games I played with the deck two were against burn and one was a melee in which all the players were pretty much out to kill the dragons before I could get out my Balerion. (I still got him out however lol) I had 1 win and 1 loss to the burn decks and came in 2nd in the Melee. In all three games however I failed to get all the chains off of my agenda, so be careful about how many you use and make sure to pop those suckers off after winning a challenge!

      1. Yeah – adding some additional claim soak is something I’m looking to do… loaded up the deck with more cards than I need for some fishbowl testing… we’ll see how that goes.

        Good advice on the chains… it can be easy to forget. I tend to forget most often when I win a defending challenge. It’s my first Maester’s build that I’ve built on my own, so it’s been an interesting exercise.

        I’ll be testing it against my newly revamped Burn deck – so we’ll see how it goes!

  3. Instead of the conclave I think maybe Advisor to the Croen would fit better. Overall, I think you are a little lite on the characters and could benefit from a few more.

    Also, I hear you on Distinct Mastery, I just think there are MUCH better options for this event slot. The Dragon Strikes is a personal favorite of mine. Surprise Deadly is a thing of beauty when used correctly. The added Renown helps the rush as well. Also, Paper Shield could give much defense against problem events like Die by the sword, no quarter, and game of cyvasse. I really don’t think you need 3x Dance with Dragons. 2x should suffice.

    In the attachments, i think you have a few too many. 2x on the dragon fear/bite should be all you need. Also, the second copperlink is going to be overkill IMO. I do think you should run LDC to be able to get back those attachments when they inevitably get discarded.

    1. Ouch – hard to remove the Conclave… but without more Maesters in the deck, they’re expensive. I’ll have to pull some attachments, mod the events as you suggest and see what I can do character-wise.

      1. It was a combination of the higher initiative and the extra claim. It’s a tough choice. Most of my intrigue characters had the Learned crest… but not all of them (but I’ve pulled some Maesters, so might need to rethink that).

      1. I run into the same situation a lot, but I’ve played it a couple of times since sticking it in and I’ve never been disappointed. I think we’re seeing a lot more kill events in general and I was too often coming from a Targ perspective because Paper Shield is so ineffective against most Targ events since so many of them require Influence.

      2. Yea, I want to find space for PS in either of my Maesters deck, because not having more cancels really wrecked a few of my games in MO where my opponent was running PS and The Hand’s Judgement. But I’ve not got a clue what to switch out.

      3. Having Oldtown Advisor helps (he’s actually better than PS because there’s no restriction), but he needs 2 chains. He’s non-unique and hard to protect against targeted kill though. Oldtown Citadel can at least bring him and his chains back to your hand though.

        Oh and for longtime followers, one of my very first posts here was about a Bara Shadows deck using Queen of Thorns.

      2. Yeah I ran it out of Stark a time or two, but the synergies in Baratheon seemed to work better (and cost less).

        With all the new Shadows goodness, I’m looking to revisit it for the fun of it all.
