I did this blog for 2 reasons.  The first was for me to learn what Hurricanus can do, and the second was to share what I’ve learned with others.  Of all the Elemental Champions, she sees the least amount of play, and I think that’s sad.  Mega Tectomoc and Incinerus get most of the attention, and Aquosia gets her share of the lime light.  Hurricanus is overlooked.  I thought I would champion her and see what I could do, and as it turns out I found a monster that I really enjoy.  I’m the type of player that tinkers with my unit and building list, so over the course of time I have changed my list about a dozen times.  I’m going to show my starting list from my first blog and my current build and give some explanation as to why I kept some things and dropped others.  I’ve tried lots of variations.  I built a Faction only list that I thought was quite good.  I tested units that I don’t normally like for her to see how they would do.  I tried a list heavy on the brawling unit side, but found that I liked the blasters better.  I think Aquosia runs brawling units much better.

Units:

Why these units over the others.  What made me drop some and add others.  I dropped the Glass Earth Kami, because my force isn’t built for brawlers.  EC can brawl, but it doesn’t fit my style of play with her.  Brawlers often beat down buildings if they can’t get to units or monsters.   Hurricanus does damage with buildings so they don’t mix well.  I also want to try and win the unit game so blasting units work better for me.  I dropped 1 of my Earth Avatars because the 2 spawn cost was a problem.  Sometimes I just wanted a 1 cost unit with Amplify, also when I took the Tanker Truck out I desperately needed a unit with Hazardous.  This still gives me 2 units with Amplify, and I still have 2 units with Nesting thanks to the Glass Earth Avatar.  I switched from the Glass Robo Squix to the Marauder, for 2 reasons.  Marauder sticks around, and the Long range blast has really helped.  I also find that I use the Marauder with a Fire Kami and Tornadus so getting the Indirect fire has been a bonus.  I still like the Glass Robo Squix, but just not for this force.  I’ve been surprised with the ION Canon Tank.  It’s helped with my Power denial game, and It’s also another 4 Def unit that’s great for securing key buildings.  I’ve used disrupt in a couple of games where it played a key roll.  The Rocket Chopper is something I’m still on the fence about.  This unit might give up it’s space to a 2nd grunt Fire Kami, or a second Water Avatar.  More games are needed before I make my choice.  I’m leaning toward adding a second grunt Fire Kami.  There have been times when I’ve needed a unit to hold an objective and fight, and the Fire Kami’s work great for that.

Buildings:

Now lets look at the buildings.  The biggest change for me is that I’ve added more Cathedrals.  They just really fit with Holy Ground limiting healing and with only being worth 1 P die on the brawl they don’t give the opponent much back.  I like the Oil Company HQ for placing in the opponents power base.  It can really mess them up, I’ve made good use of Green Unstable with that building.  All my buildings except the Stock Exchange is worth 3 pts of damage, and I run two buildings that do 4 pts.  My city is made for being Tossed or Smashed.  I got rid of the Statue of Liberty because I already have the Tokyo Triumph.  If I need to I can blast the TT for the insurance scam, or I place aggressively.  I plan on getting power dice back from building destruction from Toss and Power attacks so I run the City Center instead of the Bank HQ or Defense Contractor.  City Center is a 3 damage building that also gives me High Security.  It has a Higher Defense then the Defense Contractor and because it’s a monument when it gets destroyed you get an extra P die back.  I also run 4 buildings with Business Center.  I’ve used this action a number of times to steal their last P die while disrupting the enemy power base.  If I was to adjust any buildings I might add an Electrical Power Plant as a Morpher placement deterrent.  I would most likely switch that for 1 of the Oil Company HQs.

1x Tokyo City Center

Finding Your Monster

This is my second time going through this series and I’ve enjoyed it much more this time because I found that I really like playing Hurricanus.  Mega Mantacon is a great monster, but at the end I didn’t like him as much as I thought I would.  For Hurricanus the opposite is true.  I’ve always liked this monster, but didn’t realize how much fun I would have with her.  She’s a fun blasting monster.  She doesn’t sit at the edge of the map and try and snipe you, no she gets in your face and blasts you to pieces.  Games with her tend to be fast, which I like.  I feel like the second time around I picked up more subtleties then I didn’t the first time.

Rock you like a Hurricane

I think what I got most out these challenges was cementing some of the concepts into my play.  The other thing I noticed is where I grew as a player sense the last time I did this, and where I still have a ways to go.  I feel like the Mastering MonPoc series is like the fundamentals of the game.  If you want to be a good player you always practice the fundamentals.  Roger Federer didn’t get to be one of the best all time players buy being lazy, no he worked on the basics over and over again (Chris Young that line is specific for you).

Here’s some of my favorite blog posts:

Here’s a few blog posts that I would do over now that I’m at the end

  • Day 7 The Battlefield – I ended up changing my map a bunch of times, picking a map is still something I struggle with
  • Day 10 Going Second – I changed my map from when I did this post so I have to rethink this one.

Roads Go Ever Ever on…

Now that I’ve finished the 31 days, I think I’ll go back over a few of the days that I don’t feel as good about like my map choice and dig a little deeper into the topic.  I’m happy I picked Hurricanus, and I think she’s going to be one of my go to monsters from now on.  Now to leave you all with some classic 80s Glam Rock
