After the success of the last X-Wing Vassal tournament, I’ve been wanting to do another event.  I have so many ideas, but I need to narrow things down.  I also want to get some feedback from the community.  My first idea was to run a vassal League.  This would be less formal then the last tournament.  Players would play 1 game a week against someone they haven’t played against.  I would mix up regular games with some missions.  I would use some of the missions that FFG provided, plus a few of my own.  This sounded like a lot of fun to me.  With Regionals coming up, I want to give people a chance to practice their lists and hone their skills before the big day.  For this I would run a standard swiss style Vassal tournament.  Players play one list through the whole event, and will be scored just like you would in a standard FFG tournament.  No achievements, this time.  This event would be a way to get ready for Regionals.  This also sounds like fun to me.  I though I would open this up to the community at large and see what people want to do.

  1. So long as you can submit the lists to a source for verification, and the times are posted with enough notice, I am absolutely down for some testing for Regionals. God knows I need it.

  2. I would be interested in a “Build vs Counter-Build” contest.

Each round, players submit a list then pair off twice at random. Each player gets 2 opponents — one that will build to beat their list, and one whose list they will build to try and beat.

The purpose is to test list quality through trial-by-fire. You get to explore the flaws and merits of several lists, including your own.

      1. I actually think that idea could be challenged. I grant that certain ships counter certain ships, but it’s much harder to counter an entire squad.

      2. I like your idea Will. You could even rotate players so it’s not the same folks playing each other over and over. The losing half of the field would play a winner from the prior matches. The winners would need to keep their squads, notify their new opponent of their squad makeup, and the new opponent would get a 24 hour period to build a counter-squad before the match started.

I don’t think it would be a very “fair” tournament, but I’d participate just for the opportunity to have it as a learning experience.

Another potential twist on this idea could be to have all participants lock-in and publish their ship counts for the entire tournament (for example 2 x-wings 2 y-wings). You would then have the opportunity to decide on your upgrades and pilots before each match starts, but after you know your opponent (and therefore their ship list).

    1. In general, I’m not a huge fan of campaign rules for X-wing. The design of the game in general (and the point cost structure for ships in particular) doesn’t support advancement very well, and attempts to hack it in are going to result in imbalance–as well as less tactically and strategically interesting squads than you might otherwise build.

If it’s enough fun for people to go through with it despite the problems, I would love to seem them go ahead, but I would bow out of a league using those rules.

  3. I think you can start with the swiss style tourney so everybody gets a chance to practice for regionals and it’s a way to atract more people to Vassal.
You can count me in for any tourney you choose to run.
