Duel of the Fates
By Matthew– January 11, 2013
After writing my last post about edge battles, I decided to try something crazy and build a deck entirely built around winning the edge. I don’t actually expect this deck to end up being a great deck, it’s more of an interesting experiment that I’m going to test out a few times to see if it’s viable. My basic premise was: as many copies of Twist of Fate as possible + as many copies of Heat of Battle as possible = Win all edge battles with some extra combat tricks just for fun. So far, it’s been tested once (against Zach Bunn’s DS deck while I was driving through Tulsa yesterday) and managed to take out 2 objectives before losing, so perhaps there is hope but I expect some fine tuning to be in order.
Affiliation: Rebel Alliance
Objective Sets (10):
Hit and Run x1

So far in my deck building I try to run 9 Fate cards. 3 of each type or 4 ToF, 3 HoB and 2 ToO. It has worked out so far.
Before this deck, I’ve not really tried to get a specific number of Fate cards. This deck manages 11 (with 12 being the highest possible number with 10 objective sets right now). The real problem I’m having with the deck is that it’s impossible for me to test myself since it’s so focused on bluffing. Most of the time I can test by playing against myself and trying to be honest about what I would do during edge battles… but not so this time.
My current light side deck is:
Smuggler
Objective sets (11)
Fleeing the Empire x2
* 2 Twists of Fate
Hit n Run
*1 Twist of Fate
*1 Heat of Battle
*1 Target of Opportunity
Mission Briefing x 2
*2 Heat of Battle
Questionable contacts x2
Rumors at the cantina
The Rebel Fleet X2
*2 Target of Opportunity
Tribal Support
Do you find that Tribal Support pulls its weight? I tend to think it’s in need of more Ewok cards before it becomes worthwhile.
I have found that you don’t need several of them to be effective. Just having one on the board when you attack can be super effective. Restricting the dark side defenders can let you attack and not worry about units that do a lot of unit damage or even give you an undefended attack.
Also the enchancement in that set is down right amazing. You can keep the Palpatines from locking your board. As for the Yub Yub cards…they are nice if you can get them out but I usually just drop them in Buff edge battles.
That’s a good point. I assume you have Rumors in there to rescue Leia easier? (Sorry for picking at your deck… my instinct with an 11 set deck is to see how to cut it down to 10 sets)
You could probably get away with not using that objective but I haven’t had any problems getting cards that I need. Most of my turns begin with drawing all 6 cards because I don’t do a lot of defending with the deck.
Keep in mind that Yub Yub! can discard resource-providing enhancements like Control Room or Sith Library. It’s a great way to put the squeeze on your opponent and secure an early advantage.
Yeah, but that is just one part of it. The enchancement is nice in a splashing deck and “It could be worse” is the only damage prevention I have in the deck so it is a powerful card. The other two are a okay…for edge battle cards.
For a more serious version of the deck (meaning actually built to do things other than just win edge battles, but still rather good at that), try this:
Jedi Affiliation
Forgotten Heroes x1
A Hero’s Journey x2
The Rebel Fleet x2
Fleeing the Empire x2
Mission Briefing x2
Hit and Run x1
This should give me a bit more punch for using after winning all of the edge battles
Plus it lets you use Luke. He’s just a bad, bad man.
Well the original had 1 Luke… but 2 are even better. Dropping down to 3 ToF and 4 HoB cost me a little in the combat surprise arena, but adding two more ToO will give the deck more punch (plus Home One is awesome!)
Home One can wreccck!
Yes, yes it can. I haven’t had the chance to try out the modified deck yet, but I should be able to test it against myself in my hotel room tomorrow night if nothing else. Unless there’s somebody in the Detroit area who wants to meet up and play.
Tried out this deck a couple of times tonight (playing against myself, so not a perfect test) and it seems to work pretty well.
