A Glorious Beginning to My New Empire

In my previous post, I lamented my inability to play the imperials and how I just before my two latest tournaments gave up on imperial lists to return to the comfort zone of flying heavily shielded rebel ships. This has to change, and initially it looks good.

I played two test games at my FLGS against my regular opponents (who also are in the process of crafting new competetive builds).

My as so far untitled list consited of:

Turr Phennir (25)
Push the Limit (3)
Royal Guard TIE (0)
Stealth Device (3)
Shield Upgrade (4)

5x Obsidian Squadron Pilot (13)

In my first match I faced:

Wedge Antilles (29)
Push the Limit (3)
R2 Astromech (1)

Luke Skywalker (28)
Draw their Fire (1)
Shield Upgrade (4)
R2-D2 (4)

Biggs Darklighter (25)
Shield Upgrade (4)
R5 Astromech (1)

The initial exchange proved somewhat lackluster fpr both forces but once Biggs went down my TIEs blocked the less maneuverable X-Wings and despite Luke’s Draw their Fire saving Wedge twice from death the ace X-Wing pilot finally succumbed from the focused fire from Turr and my TIEs. As time was called I had an unscathed Turr and two undamaged TIEs versus a shieldless Luke.

My plan to use Turr as a flanker worked wonders and he managed to avoid being shot at for the enitre game.

In the second game I was up against:

Rookie Pilot (21)

“Dutch” Vander (23)
Ion Cannon Turret (5)

Garven Dreis (26)

Biggs Darklighter (25)

In this game I was (most likely bolstered by my previous victory) too reckless with Turr and sent him in to kill Biggs in the first exchange, risking exposing him to the return fire from Garven. I did manage to destroy Biggs in the first round of combat, but I also lost Turr from the combined fire of Garven and an Ion hit from “Dutch.”

Fortunately, my Obsidians carried the day by blowing “Dutch ” to kingdom come in a spectacular show of 12 red dice (four TIEs at range 1)  all rolling hits in the following turn as the slow Y-Wing was unable to avoid my swarm’s fire arc.

Once we were down to my TIEs versus Garven and the Rookie it was only a matter of time. Victory for the Empire!

  1. Nice report! Any report that has Imperials killing Biggs is a good report to me. Looking forward to seeing more people experimenting with the Imperial Aces upgrade options like the Royal Guard.

(Note – I think you mean Obsidian x5, not x6.)

  2. Excellent! I’m glad to hear other people are having success with Obsidian mini-swarms. Last night I ran
    Obsidian x5
    Rhymer + PTL + APTs
Against Han and 2 rookies. Han ate the APTs hard and was chewed apart by the ties and the Rookies didn’t last much longer after that. Here’s a list of Obsidian mini-swarm squads I’ve tried and/or want to try:
    Obsidian x5
    OMG + HLC + AdvS + Engine

    Obsidian x5
    Rhymer + PTL + APTs

    Obsidian x5
Jax + PTL + Shield + Targ Comp

    Obsidian x5
    Soontir + PTL + Shield

    Obsidian x5
    Turr + PTL + RGT + Hull + Shield

    Obsidian x4
    Krassis + HLC + Recon + Seismic

    Obsidian x4
    Gamma + Conc. Miss + Seismic x2

    Obsidian x4
    Saber + PTL x2

    Obsidian x4
    Tempest Squad. + Stealth x2

That last one is just for fun, since I have 2 Tie Advanced and don’t know what to do with them.

    1. I took second at a Store Championship running the
      Saber + PTL x 2
      Obsidian x 4
I went 3-0, 2 modified wins. The Obsidians really carry the game against the PS2 heavy lists, making them totally worth it. I only missed Howlrunner in 1 game where I rolled 10 straight rolls of 1 hit, 1 blank.
It’s a solid list. I think 2x PTL Sabers is justtttt right with swarm backup. 1 interceptor scares me too much.

      1. Excellent to hear, that’s a list I haven’t tried yet! Did you flank with the Interceptors? Wondering if I would run both interceptors together up the side or if I should split them up, one on each flank and maybe the ties up the center.

      2. Oh and I completely agree about the Obsidians being good against PS2 lists. It seems like most lists have a low PS ship, and for a few points you can fire before those ships. Obsidians are totally worth it IMO.

      3. I ran 1 saber on flank, 1 in the back corner of the Tie formation, so he can easily break away. I really wanted my enemy to go for the group.

I agree, they are a good buy on many occasions.

I MIGHT prefer action denial with Academies, but that’s just personal preference and comfort.
