We had one priority with the Crisis Token Set – make the tokens on the board look as good as our painted models. After spending hour after hour meticulously applying base coats, highlights, washes, and details, we wanted to look down and see the same amount of care and visual pop from our tokens.

We started with a few basic acrylic and paint fill designs, but they just didn’t achieve the visual impact we were looking for. Though it’s a more intricate process, and more expensive, we pretty quickly switched to the comic-inspired, two-tone airbrush style originally developed for our Cosmic Tokens. Once we saw those first prototypes, and heard the reactions to them, we knew we were on the right track.

On the function side, we wanted smaller, flippable tokens in order to prevent the mountains of cardboard that often cover up card text or art and make health and power difficult to assess from across the table. The 1-2 flip on Power and Damage made the most sense and prevented the “making change” awkwardness of 1s and 3s, while the Activation-Dazed flip kept the playing space tidy and easy to read – it’s often that you’ll be dazing something that already activated, and very rare that you’ll activate something that has been dazed (Field Dressing).

Finally, on the quantities, we struck a middle ground between “everything you could possibly need for 1 character” and “everything you probably need for two characters”. One big set that serves every list is impractical – because Hulk exists, and technically every character could get to 10 power. Additionally, scenarios have different point costs, and some players will end up running 8 or 9 2-cost characters, while others will run 4 bigger models. There’s a lot of variance in how you construct your list, one of the best parts of the game, so we made a pack that was modular enough to adapt without overspending on things you don’t need.
