The entire Cosmic Token line was born from our love of comic books, both as a thrilling visual medium and unique form of storytelling, and a reverence for the experiences we share when a game is on the table. With this universe being so important to so many people, present company included, there was always an immense amount of pressure bubbling right under the surface. We obsessed over the smallest details of each Villain Cosmic Token design and tried a myriad of new techniques, going through countless prototypes and airing frustrations more often than we care to admit – all in order to “make it perfect” and do justice to the art form.
First to go were dials – a fine mechanism for efficiently tracking a game, but too far removed from the visual delight created by the ink and color of evolving panels. While not as strictly efficient as dials, the tactile impact of adding and subtracting health and the visual representation it yields is much more satisfying and immersive. (If you don’t believe us, listen to this Covenant Cast episode that covers this exact statement more fully!)
Then, after a remarkable amount of trial and error with a technique we’ve been chasing for years – a two-tone paint fill method that creates a token face with two different colors – was honed and established. Those tremendous bursts of life on each token were a big step in achieving the “classic” comic book style of dark, black outlines with pops of color achieved with a combination of traditional paint and airbrush.
Next, we brought lessons learned from the Arkham Horror LCG and our corresponding Mythos Token line to develop an efficient board system that makes the tracking of health, damage, and threat a thematic and enjoyable part of playing the game. The Cosmic Board has a striking design and beautiful matte black finish, as well as a satisfying heft – our heaviest product to date, thanks to a triple resin process and felt-backing.
Finally, the threat tokens took on a life of their own. How fantastic would it be if you could tailor the visuals of a given scheme by using tokens that drive home the consequences of failure? That idea yielded six different threat token designs, all included in the set, that represent classic, nefarious schemes – like building a super laser or busting open a bank vault. The 10/20 variation ups the ante by showing an entire city at risk and, if nothing is done, completely destroyed. It really forces you not only to fully engage with the story being created at the table, but also to wrestle with the consequences of your failure. You’ll thwart more, guaranteed.
We’ve now arrived at the end of the process, which is pretty startling after being in the throes of design for over a month and a half, and, seeing all 30 unique designs on the table, it does certainly feel worth it. We’re really, really happy with the entire line. And we know you will be too.

The Villain Cosmic Token Set includes:
20x 1/2 Threat Token (4x Bomb, Bank Vault, Super Laser, Bullets, Police)
2x 10 / 20 Threat Token
5x 1 / 2 Health Token
2x 10 / 20 Health Token
1x 50 / 100 Health Token
5x Acceleration / 3-All Purpose Token
3x Tough / 1-All Purpose Token
3x Confused / 1-All Purpose Token
3x Stunned / 1-All-Purpose Token
1x First Player Token
The Villain Cosmic Token Set is designed to cover the villains and schemes, and their interactions, found in the Core Set. During all of our testing, these quantities were ideal. If Galactus releases with 400 health, or if a scheme releases with 70 threat, we’ll solve for that – and probably make it quite special. The biggest thing we ran into with threat tracking was multiple side schemes with 3-4 threat each, which is why we included so many 1/2s in the set.
For tracking Villain health, we suggest using one side for the 1/2 tokens and the other side for the 10/20 and 50/100. Your 1/2 track will always count from 0 to 9, and then reset as needed.
We highly suggest adding two Cosmic Boards to this set – it makes a huge difference. If you need to cover heroes as well, check out our Hero Cosmic Token Set. In our groups, we encourage everyone at the table to buy their own Hero components and split the cost of the Villain Cosmic Set and Cosmic Boards.
